What Is Physical Therapy?

According to the American Physical Therapy Association, “physical therapists (PTs) are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility – in many cases without expensive surgery and often reducing the need for long-term use of prescription medications and their side effects” (http://www.apta.org, 2017).

In essence, physical therapists are movement experts, with emphasis on the ability to analyze faulty movement patterns and offer corrective alternative exercises to improve function and to prevent future occurrences of similar injuries.  The idea is to employ methods of visual and tactile analysis, followed by handling skills with corrective movements, which will reduce pain and improve general function and well-being.  Although historically, physical therapy has been used to correct and restore this function, the consensus among other like-minded medical professionals is that physical therapy can be equally effective at preventing future injury or dysfunction.

Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy is an extension and enhancement of this paradigm, melding the highest level of orthopedic problem-solving with physical manipulation of tissues and joints, all reinforced with very specific exercise prescription tailored to each individual patient.
